Don’t Judge a Plant Based on its Appearance

花屋に並んでいる美しい花は、私たちの目を楽しませてくれますが、道端に咲く雑草はどうでしょう。人の目を楽しませることができない無用なものなのでしょうか。

田んぼなどの土手に生えている雑草は、見た目は地味でも力強く根を張って土をつかみ、土手が崩れないようにしています。観賞用にもならないと言って、雑草を取り除いてしまったら、土手は崩れやすくなり、田んぼの保水力も弱まってしまいます。

植物が有用かどうかは、見た目からはわからないのではないでしょうか。

The beautiful flowers on display at a florist are a delightful sight, but what about the weeds growing on the roadside? Can we say that something not pleasing to the eye is useless?

The weeds that grow along the banks of rice paddy fields may be a boring sight, but their strong roots keep the soil intact and prevent the embankment from crumbling. If we remove the weeds, saying that they are not visually appealing, the embankment would become weaker and lose its capacity to retain water.

We can’t judge whether a plant is useful or not based solely on its appearance.
