Web 2.0 Trends That Will Blow Your Mind

By | April 15, 2008

The Internet has changed dramatically over the past five years. Social networking websites have leaped ahead of other online services and streaming video websites have amassed hundreds of millions of viewers. These days, the total number of page views for Facebook and YouTube surpasses that of Yahoo and Google combined.

Social networking websites have grown by leaps and bounds throughout the past five years. Believe it or not, it was only the summer of 2003 when MySpace was launched. Not long after, in early 2004, Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook. Now MySpace has over 100 million users worldwide and Facebook trails not far behind with 67 million. Given those statistics it may seem that MySpace is the dominant player. In reality, Facebook is growing faster than MySpace. Make sure you swallow your coffee before you read this next statistic – 250,000 new people join Facebook every single day – a staggering 305% yearly growth rate! Facebook’s success is due largely to opening its platform to third party developers to create customizable “widgets”. There are now more than 20,000 (mainly annoying) applications available to Facebook users. At the beginning of 2007, Facebook had 20 million unique visitors daily. By the end of 2007 that number had increased to nearly 100 million. You may want to consider getting in on its IPO.

And then of course there’s the ever popular and productivity reducing YouTube. Can you believe that its only been around since February of 2005? Now it’s the #2 most frequently accessed site on the web, second only to Yahoo, according to Alexa web statistics. By the end of 2007, YouTube had 250 million unique visitors daily compared to just over 100 million at the beginning of the year. Political candidates for the American 2008 presidential election are harnessing YouTube to get their message across to a younger audience. Viral marketing campaigns such as the popular “Will It Blend?” videos from Blendtec are helping companies advertise their products in creative and inexpensive ways.
